Importance of Networking

Networking is a very important part of life, business and for job seekers; it‘s about building relationships.  Job-Seekers need to have a network of contacts, a career network that can provide support, information and job leads.  There are many different forms of networking, either on-line or in person, it can be effective in both areas; being involved with LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter can be a great social and professional network.  Belonging to clubs, groups and associations that relate to your business or personal aptitude will also strengthen your network.  It’s getting to know people, common interests, experiences, wisdom and challenges, things we can connect and relate to.  Sometimes the most important thing to do is just show up at a networking event; just simply getting out there, stepping out of our comfort zone and meeting one new person allows your contact list to grow.  When speaking with someone new, ask open ended questions and listen; examples: How did you get started in your line of work?  What do you like best about it? These types of questions allow for the conversation to flow naturally hopefully finding common ground, interest, experience, therefore extending the length of the conversation. By networking often enough, before long, you'll cultivate a network of endless referrals.
